A Look Back at: Mary Jo - Judging at the 2007 Memphis in May Finals

Mary Jo is a BBQ judge certified by the Memphis BBQ Association and the Kansas City Barbeque Society (she's got her sights on a Texas certification next). Last year, she participated in the judging of the 2007 Memphis In May International BBQ Cookoff, her first national finals event. Mary Jo has sent us pictures that feature her participation as a BBQ finals judge and her role in Food Network's documentary of the event!

Here are some notes about the photos from Mary Jo:

"The first two pics are my 'day before the contest' filming with the Food-TV Network – they did a 90 minute documentary on the event. The next 4 pics are me judging various teams, and the last picture is the Overall Grand Champion – winning by beating out over 300 teams. In the pics, the big guy with the beard is a Georgia boy – Myron Mixon out of Unadilla, Georgia. He is a living legend among the BBQ cult – and as you can see and he will tell you – he believes that you should never trust a skinny BBQ cooker! He has three MIM Overall Grand Champion titles under his belt and is out to break this record with #4 and he will have the highest number of Overall Grand Champion years in the history of the event. His team name is Jack’s Old South and his motto is “In it to win it!”. Can you believe that he travels and competes in over 200 shows a year – and makes a six figure living at it – just goes to prove you truly cannot judge a book by its cover! I recommend the Memphis In May festival to anyone as a great weekend trip (adults only, please) – it is just too hot and crowded and crazy for the little ones."
